At the recent eLearning Network showcase event, I attended an interesting presentation made by Nick Timpson of my old firm Epic and Claire Little from leading psychometric test providers, SHL. SHL train something like 10,000 people a year to use their tests, most of whom are HR people. With Epic’s help, SHL have moved from pure classroom-based delivery to a blend that involves self-study e-learning prior to the face-to-face event.

Nothing unusual in that you might think. About time too! However, in my experience, HR is not the easiest audience to convince of the merits of e-learning – the typical cop-out response being that e-learning doesn’t fit their learning style. Anyway, SHL, who are of course researchers by profession, did some investigating to find out what it is that HR people really want from a formal learning experience. Apparently they like their learning very practical / case study-based and modular, in short pieces – much like most other people in fact. More importantly, they don’t want to sweat over the statistical element of SHL’s courses in public – they want lots of practice in the privacy of their own homes, where they can go at their own pace without any peer pressure. Trainers sometimes forget just how intimidating classroom events can be, particularly when the participants are not feeling so sure of themselves. Sometimes nothing beats sitting down and figuring it out for yourself.
